The Delhi government has given permission for the removal and transplanting of trees that are obstructing the construction of an army-related project in Delhi Cantt. Due to these trees, the construction work is getting affected. Permission was sought from the construction agency to remove and transplant 214 trees to clear the project site.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has cleared the way for the construction of the project by approving the proposal in the national interest. He has approved the proposal of the construction agency with the condition of planting 2140 new saplings instead of these trees as per the rule made keeping in view the protection of the environment.
The construction agency had, through a letter to the Environment and Forest Department, sought approval to remove and transplant 214 trees to clear the site. Kejriwal said that with the completion of this project, the army will get a lot of convenience.
They are ensuring that modern development does not adversely affect Delhi and 10-fold plantation has been made mandatory to compensate for any trees that may be affected. The proposal will be placed before the LG. The Delhi government has said that the transplant will be done near the identified project site. Apart from the identified trees, the agency cannot harm any other tree.
Plants will have to be planted according to the climate
In lieu of removal and transplantation of trees, saplings of different species adapted to the soil and climate of Delhi will be planted. These include plants of other species including Neem, Amaltas, Peepal, Pilkhan, Gular, Banyan, Desi Keekar and Arjun. These will be planted on non-forest land as saplings of six to eight feet height. This work has been asked to be completed within six months. They will submit the report to Tree Officer for supervision.
